São Tomé and Príncipe is an independent island nation situated in the Gulf of Guinea off the western coast of Central Africa. As the country is not a member of the European Union, it operates under its own national legal and regulatory framework governing telecommunications and radio equipment.

Consequently, radiofrequency and telecommunications devices intended for importation, distribution, sale, installation, or operation within São Tomé and Príncipe may be subject to national regulatory approval requirements before they can be placed on the local market.

Regulatory oversight is provided by the Autoridade Geral de Regulação (AGER), the national regulatory authority established under Decree-Law No. 14/2005 of 24 August. AGER is responsible for regulating and supervising the telecommunications, postal, water, and electricity sectors across the country.

Within the telecommunications sector, the authority oversees spectrum planning and management, radio frequency allocation, numbering resources, licensing and authorization activities, equipment compliance, and market supervision. Through these responsibilities, AGER seeks to promote the efficient, secure, and lawful use of telecommunications networks, radio spectrum, and electronic communications infrastructure while ensuring compliance with national regulatory requirements.
