SIRIM Type Approval: Overview

Malaysia regulates telecommunications and radiofrequency equipment through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), while product certification is administered by SIRIM QAS International Sdn. Bhd., the certification body appointed by MCMC to manage the Type Approval process.

All communications and radio equipment intended to be imported, marketed, distributed, installed, or used in Malaysia must generally obtain SIRIM Type Approval (Certificate of Conformity - CoC) before being placed on the Malaysian market unless specifically exempted under applicable regulations.

The regulatory framework covers a wide range of RF-enabled and telecommunications equipment including mobile phones, tablets, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices, IoT products, wireless communication equipment, customer premises equipment (CPE), satellite terminals, radio transmitters and receivers, RFID equipment, short-range devices (SRDs), and other telecommunications products.

The approval process is primarily documentation-based and requires submission of accredited test reports demonstrating compliance with applicable Malaysian technical standards. Foreign test reports issued by accredited laboratories are accepted, provided they comply with MCMC's recognized standards and regulatory requirements.

A local representative registered in Malaysia is mandatory for obtaining SIRIM Type Approval. Approved products are also subject to mandatory SIRIM certification labelling before they are marketed in Malaysia.
Under normal circumstances, the certification process takes approximately 4–8 weeks, depending on product complexity and document completeness.

Once granted, the Certificate of Conformity (CoC) is valid for five (5) years, subject to continued compliance with applicable regulations and technical standards.
