Cayman Islands OfReg - Type Approval: Overview
The Utility Regulation and Competition Office (OfReg) is the official independent multi-sector regulatory authority responsible for regulating telecommunications equipment and radio frequency (RF) devices in the Cayman Islands. OfReg ensures that all Information and Communications Technology (ICT) equipment, networks, and services comply with national regulations and operate without causing harmful interference within the territory’s radio spectrum.
The Cayman Islands follows a recognition-based certification system. As there are no local testing laboratories available, OfReg primarily relies on internationally recognized certifications and test reports, including European Conformity (CE) standards, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approvals, or both, to verify product compliance.
The OfReg approval process does not require local testing or a local representative, provided that valid international certification documents and supporting test reports are submitted. Once issued, the OfReg Type Approval Certificate remains valid for 10 years (120 months).
The standard approval timeline is approximately 5–6 weeks from the receipt of complete documentation and applicable government fees. Currently, there are no exemptions for devices intended to utilize radio spectrum or connect to public telecommunications networks.
