The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) has announced the start of an International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) registration system to improve mobile device security and stop the use of unregistered devices in the country. Effective January 29, 2025, all SIM-enabled devices including mobile phones, tablets, and dongles, must have a TRCSL-approved IMEI to work on local telecommunication networks.
This initiative aims to stop the spread of unauthorized devices and ensure that all mobile equipment used in Sri Lanka follows national regulations. Devices already connected to local networks before January 28, 2025, are exempt from this new rule. However, unregistered devices trying to connect after this date will be denied network access.
To help with this, TRCSL has introduced an online Device Clearance System. Individuals importing or carrying SIM-enabled devices into Sri Lanka must register their devices through this system. The registration process requires clearance from relevant government institutions, including Sri Lanka Customs, the Department of Import and Export Control, and the Ministry of Defense.
Consumers are advised to purchase approved devices only from vendors with a valid TRCSL Vendor License. To verify whether a device's IMEI is approved, users can send an SMS to 1909 in the following format: IMEI <space> <15-digit IMEI number>.
This move follows global trends in telecommunications regulation, where countries are increasingly implementing stricter device authentication and registration requirements to prevent fraud and improve network security. By enforcing IMEI registration, TRCSL aims to create a more secure and regulated mobile environment for all users in Sri Lanka. For the official news, please refer to this link.
