South Korea Proposes New Tablet PC Classification Criteria Under KATS Safety Requirements
The Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS) has published Notice No. 2026-143, proposing amendments to the Operational Guidelines for Electrical Appliances and Consumer Products Safety Management. The public consultation is open until 10 July 2026.
One of the key proposed changes affects the classification of Tablet PCs under South Korea's electrical product safety framework.
Under the proposed amendment, a device will be classified as a Tablet PC only if it has a screen diagonal length of 20 cm or more. The revised definition also clarifies that products with voice-calling functionality can still be considered Tablet PCs if they meet the screen size requirement.
The proposed revision is expected to provide a clearer distinction between modern large-screen smartphones and Tablet PCs, helping manufacturers and importers determine the correct certification pathway for their products.
In addition to the Tablet PC update, KATS has also proposed revisions to battery cell testing requirements as part of the same consultation.
Stakeholders, including manufacturers, importers, testing laboratories, and industry associations, may submit comments on the proposed amendments until 10 July 2026.
