POTRAZ Proposes Mobile Handset Registration to Tackle Cybercrime
The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) has proposed the creation of a Central Equipment Identification Database (CEID)Â to register all mobile handsets by their IMEI numbers. The system would link devices to SIM cards, aiming to combat cybercrime and curb device theft.
Engineer Hash Myambo of POTRAZ said the new database will help block lost or stolen phones across all networks. He noted ongoing work with ICT stakeholders on national digital policies. However, critics raise privacy concerns and warn of possible misuse to suppress dissent, with similar efforts elsewhere showing mixed results.
