Oman Launches Public Consultation on Technical Requirements for 6G Deployment

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of Oman has launched a public consultation to support the country's preparations for future deployment of International Mobile Telecommunications 2030 (IMT-2030), commonly known as 6G networks.

The consultation aims to gather feedback from industry stakeholders, technology providers, academia, and other interested parties on the technical and regulatory requirements necessary for successful 6G implementation in the Sultanate.

Key Objectives

The consultation focuses on:

  • Assessing Oman's readiness for adopting IMT-2030 and 6G technologies.

  • Identifying stakeholder priorities, challenges, future use cases, and performance requirements.

  • Collecting feedback on potential spectrum bands for 6G, including:

    • 4.4–4.8 GHz

    • 7.125–8.4 GHz

    • 14.8–15.35 GHz

    • Bands above 90 GHz

  • Evaluating infrastructure readiness, including:

    • Fiber-optic backhaul networks

    • Edge computing

    • Small-cell deployments

    • Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN)

  • Aligning national planning with international 6G standardization activities led by organizations such as the ITU-R, 3GPP, and NGMN Alliance.

  • Encouraging collaboration between government entities, industry, and academic institutions to support research, innovation, and early technology trials.

Stakeholders are invited to provide input on IMT-2030 (6G) use cases, performance targets (latency, reliability, sensing, AI-native networks), spectrum needs, future infrastructure (including NTN and cloud-native cores), regulatory frameworks, investment and rollout timelines, and R&D or pilot opportunities.

Comments must be submitted by 30 June 2026. The TRA will review all inputs but is not obligated to adopt them.

Industry Significance

The consultation represents an important early step in Oman's long-term 6G strategy. By engaging stakeholders now, the TRA aims to develop a roadmap for spectrum planning, infrastructure development, regulatory readiness, and innovation that will support the future introduction of IMT-2030 technologies and position Oman for next-generation digital connectivity.
