NTRA to Block Activation of Non‑Compliant Mobile Phones in Egypt

The National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) of Egypt has announced that, starting 1 February 2026, it will implement technical measures to block the activation of new mobile phones that do not meet internationally approved technical standards, particularly those set by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA).

This initiative strengthens regulatory oversight and supports NTRA’s efforts to protect consumer rights, safeguard user safety, and ensure high-quality telecom services across Egypt.

Key Highlights:

Activation Blocking: Devices not meeting approved technical standards will be blocked from activation on Egyptian networks.

Legal Context: Under Telecommunications Regulation Law No. 10 of 2003, importing, marketing, or trading telecom equipment without NTRA approval is prohibited.

This update emphasizes the growing importance of device compliance in emerging markets and the responsibility of manufacturers, importers, distributors, and retailers to ensure all mobile devices adhere to local standards before sale or activation.
