Nigeria Launches 2026–2030 Spectrum Roadmap to Boost 5G and Broadband

Nigeria has unveiled its Spectrum Roadmap for 2026–2030, setting out a structured plan to expand broadband access, improve network quality, and accelerate the adoption of next-generation technologies.

The roadmap, issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), provides a clear framework for managing radio frequency spectrum, an essential resource for mobile communications, 5G, and digital services. The initiative aims to address rising data demand while supporting long-term digital and economic growth.

 Key Highlights

  • Four strategic pillars: Digital inclusion, market-driven investment, improved quality of service, and innovation

  • Spectrum expansion: Increase from approximately 1.07 GHz to 3.8 GHz by 2030, enabling higher capacity and better performance

  • Rising data demand: Average data usage expected to grow from 8.5 GB to 17.7 GB per user per month

  • 5G growth target: Coverage to reach at least 50% of the population by 2030

  • Rural connectivity focus: Deployment of low-frequency bands such as 600 MHz to improve coverage in underserved areas

Key Technologies

The roadmap supports the deployment and expansion of:

  • 5G networks

  • Internet of Things (IoT) and AI-driven applications

  • Satellite connectivity, including Direct-to-Device (D2D) services

These technologies are expected to enhance connectivity, enable innovation, and support multiple sectors of the economy.

Implementation Plan

  • 2026–2027: Conduct spectrum audits and allocate key bands such as 600 MHz

  • 2026–2028: Expand capacity through mmWave and 6 GHz spectrum

  • By 2030: Optimize spectrum usage and conduct new spectrum auctions

2030 Vision

  • Approximately 200 million internet users

  • 96% population coverage with 4G

  • 5G coverage reaching 50% of the population

  • Improved average speeds of 65–80 Mbps

The roadmap reflects Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its digital infrastructure. By expanding spectrum capacity and improving its management, the country aims to deliver faster, more reliable connectivity and build a more inclusive, high-speed digital economy by 2030.
