Nepal Telecommunications Authority Issues Warning Against Unauthorized Use of Internet Services
The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) issued an important notice on May 5, 2025, regarding the illegal use and provision of telecommunication services in Nepal. The Authority has observed that in certain areas, including high-altitude mountain base camps, trekking agencies are illegally using satellite (geo-satellite) internet services provided by foreign telecommunication providers.
This practice violates Section 21 of the Telecommunications Act, 2053, which prohibits the operation of telecommunication services without prior permission from the Government of Nepal or a permit from the NTA. The Authority has strongly advised all concerned parties to refrain from such unauthorized activities.
The NTA has warned that anyone found providing or using telecommunication (internet) services without the necessary licenses or permits will face legal action under the Telecommunications Act, 2053. The Authority has also urged the public to cooperate by reporting any such unauthorized operations to help enforce the law effectively.
