Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has published the draft Mobile Broadband Enhancement Plan – Nepal’s Road to 5G on 10 August 2026 for stakeholder review.

The draft plan aims to strengthen Nepal’s mobile broadband services and support the transition toward 5G, considering growing data demand, market developments, international practices, and input from telecom service providers.

Key proposals include:

• Phasing out 3G services by 2026

• Increasing spectrum availability for mobile broadband and 5G

• Auctioning 700 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2600 MHz, 3500 MHz and 26 GHz bands

• Promoting Carrier Aggregation and network infrastructure upgrades

• Expanding small cells and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA)

• Modernizing fiber and microwave backhaul for 5G

• Strengthening cybersecurity and data governance frameworks

• Establishing a phased roadmap toward nationwide 5G and future 6G readinessNTA has invited concerned stakeholders to submit their comments, suggestions, and recommendations within 15 days from the date of publication.

The draft plan marks an important step in Nepal’s regulatory and infrastructure preparation for next-generation mobile connectivity.
