Eswatini to Phase Out 2G and 3G Networks by 2030: ESCCOM Issues Official Timeline
The Eswatini Communications Commission (ESCCOM) has issued Notice No. 5/2025, outlining a definitive roadmap to retire 2G and 3G mobile networks across the country by 2030, as part of a broader push to modernize the national telecom infrastructure.
According to the notice, effective 30 November 2025, the importation and type approval of mobile devices supporting only 2G or 3G connectivity will be officially prohibited. This decision is intended to prevent outdated technologies from entering the market and ensure all new devices align with modern network capabilities.
The network shutdown will follow a two-stage process:
By 31 December 2028, all 2G networks across Eswatini will be decommissioned.
By 31 December 2030, the country will also complete the shutdown of all 3G networks.
ESCCOM stated that the phased approach allows stakeholders and consumers time to shift to modern technologies like 4G and 5G. The plan, shaped by public consultation, aims to optimize spectrum use, enhance service quality, and align Eswatini with global telecom trends. It will also improve internet access and support the rollout of next-generation services. For more such info on Eswatini, ESCCOM regulatory updates, feel free to contact us at info@nanotechsol.com
