BOCRA Exempts Key RF Equipment from Type Approval

In early August 2023, the Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority (BOCRA) issued a formal notification exempting certain radio frequency (RF) equipment from the Type Approval process. This update follows the review of the Type Approval Guidelines 2023, which were published on February 27, 2023.

According to the exemption list, devices embedded with Wi-Fi transceivers, Bluetooth transceivers, and Ethernet interfaces are exempt from Type Approval, provided that the Wi-Fi transceiver operates on frequency bands approved by the Authority. Additionally, receive-only equipment (such as FM/MW/SW radios, televisions, satellite decoders, and set-top boxes), vehicle-embedded radio and telecommunications terminal equipment (RTTE) (including Bluetooth, navigation systems, remote sensors, and car keys), and Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) terminals with the "ITU" mark are also exempt from Type Approval.

This regulatory adjustment aims to streamline the market entry process for compliant devices, reducing administrative burdens for manufacturers and importers. However, it's crucial for stakeholders to ensure that their equipment complies with BOCRA's technical specifications and operates within the approved frequency bands to benefit from these exemptions.
