Bahrain's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has released a new Position Paper explaining how licence-exempt frequency bands can be used in the Kingdom.

The guidance covers wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, LoRaWAN, and IoT devices, which play an important role in smart city projects and connected technologies.

According to the TRA, devices operating in approved licence-exempt bands do not require an individual spectrum licence. However, they must comply with the Authority's technical requirements and must not cause harmful interference to licensed services.

The paper also confirms that radio equipment using licence-exempt frequencies must still obtain TRA Type Approval, unless specifically exempted under existing regulations.
