Nigeria Opens Lower 6 GHz Band for Wi-Fi 6 and Wireless Access Systems

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has issued new Guidelines for the Use of the Lower 6 GHz Band (5925–6425 MHz), paving the way for the deployment of Wi-Fi 6 and other Wireless Access Systems (WAS/RLAN) in the country.

The framework, introduced under the Nigerian Communications Act 2003, aims to support high-speed, low-latency applications by providing license-exempt access to the band on a shared, non-exclusive basis.

Key provisions include:

  • License-exempt use with mandatory Operational Licence-exemption certificates.

  • Mandatory Type Approval of all equipment before importation and deployment.

  • Indoor Low Power (ILP) devices restricted to indoor use only.

  • Very Low Power (VLP) devices permitted for indoor and outdoor use (excluding drones).

  • Compliance with ETSI EN 303 687 technical standards, emission limits, and spectrum-sharing mechanisms.

  • Users must notify NCC upon deployment and submit biannual usage data.

The NCC emphasized that non-compliance may result in fines, sanctions, or suspension, while also reaffirming its right to inspect systems for compliance.

This move aligns Nigeria with international best practices in spectrum management and is expected to boost connectivity, innovation, and digital services nationwide. To learn more or request compliance support regarding Nigeria’s NCC, email us at info@nanotechsol.com.
