Iraq Opens 6 GHz Band for Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 Under New SRD & UWB Regulation
The Communications and Media Commission (CMC) of Iraq has issued the “Regulation on Short Range Radio Communication Devices (SRD) and Devices Using Ultra-Wideband (UWB) Technology” under Decision No. 122/Q/2025, effective 22 September 2025.
The regulation modernizes Iraq’s spectrum framework by setting comprehensive rules for SRD and UWB devices to enhance spectrum efficiency, foster innovation, and align national policies with ETSI and ITU standards.
Key Highlights
6 GHz Band Opened for Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7: The regulation officially authorizes the 5945–6425 MHz frequency band for indoor Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 use, enhancing broadband capacity and supporting next-generation wireless connectivity.
Expanded SRD and UWB Framework: The regulation broadens SRD use across RFID, ITS, vehicle radar, wireless audio, and LPR systems, while introducing UWB rules for location tracking, material analysis, and vehicle access in line with ETSI standards.
Authorization Required for GPR/WPR Systems: GPR/WPR systems now require a CMC license and must operate on a non-interference basis, limited to law enforcement, rescue, research, mining, and construction purposes.
Alignment and Enforcement
The regulation aligns Iraq’s spectrum policies with ETSI and ITU frameworks, supporting technologies such as IoT, automotive radar, and Wi-Fi 6E/7. The CMC will conduct market surveillance to ensure compliance, with penalties for violations. Have questions about Iraq’s latest CMC regulation? Reach out to us at info@nanotechsol.com
