Iraq’s Draft Regulatory Framework and Licensing Exemptions for SRD & UWB Devices
Iraq’s Communications and Media Commission (CMC) has introduced a draft regulatory framework for Short-Range Devices (SRDs) and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technologies. This initiative aims to modernize spectrum management, support the integration of emerging technologies such as Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7, and expand the use of frequency bands for SRD technologies, including the 6 GHz WLAN band.
The draft framework proposes a simplified, license-exempt operating model for compliant devices. This approach aligns with international standards and is designed to accelerate the deployment of next-generation wireless technologies across Iraq.
Key Objectives
Streamline the deployment and operation of eligible telecommunications devices
Eliminate the need for individual licenses for low-power, non-interfering devices
Encourage innovation and market access
Ensure regulatory clarity in the evolving wireless ecosystem
Devices Eligible for Exemption
Devices that may qualify for license-free operation include:
Remote controls
Wireless keyboards
Public Wi-Fi hotspots
Certain satellite terminals
Other compliant SRD and UWB-based equipment
Entities using exempt devices must fully comply with the CMC’s technical and operational standards. Non-compliance may lead to enforcement actions.
The CMC has launched a public consultation process to gather feedback from stakeholders, including manufacturers, operators, and industry professionals. The feedback will help shape the final version of the regulatory framework.
