Ghana NCA Opens Public Consultation on Lower 6 GHz (L6GHz) Band for Wi-Fi 6E

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has launched a public consultation on the use of the 5925–6425 MHz (Lower 6 GHz, L6GHz) band for Wireless Access Systems/Radio Local Area Networks (WAS/RLAN), commonly used for Wi-Fi 6E.

Background and Scope

  • The L6GHz band is part of the global 6 GHz spectrum, divided into:

    • Lower 6 GHz (5925–6425 MHz) – proposed for Wi-Fi 6E

    • Upper 6 GHz (6425–7125 MHz) – reserved for International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT)

  • Wi-Fi 6E (IEEE 802.11ax) expands Wi-Fi into the 6 GHz spectrum, offering higher data rates, increased capacity, and support for advanced applications like Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR).

  • Globally, countries including the USA, Canada, Chile, South Korea, and members of the EU have allocated parts or all of the 6 GHz band for unlicensed Wi-Fi use.

Technical and Operational Conditions

  • Low Power Indoor (LPI): 23 dBm mean EIRP, restricted to indoor use (including trains with metal-coated windows), not permitted outdoors.

  • Very Low Power (VLP): 14 dBm mean EIRP, allowed for indoor and portable outdoor use, excluding drones.

  • Devices must implement spectrum sharing to avoid interference with incumbent service

The consultation will run until 25 February 2026, inviting input from service providers, ICT consumers, and the general public. Respondents are asked to submit comments via email. For more details on Ghana NCA , Feel free to contact us at info@nanotechsol.com
