CRA Qatar Directs Mobile Providers to Improve Consumer Experience
The Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) of Qatar has directed Ooredoo Qatar and Vodafone Qatar to transition to the high-speed Time Division Duplex (TDD) technique in the 2.6 GHz frequency band to enhance public mobile networks. This move supports both 4G and 5G technologies, improving the telecom experience for consumers in Qatar. By aligning with International Telecommunication Union (ITU) recommendations and global standards, CRA’s decision ensures efficient use of the available spectrum and harmonized operations across the Gulf region, enabling faster and higher-quality services.
The switch from the existing Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) method to TDD must be completed by March 31, 2025. Mobile service providers are required to ensure their networks are ready for the transition while minimizing any negative impacts on service quality. Once implemented, the new TDD technique will allow providers to offer faster, more flexible high-speed data services, meeting the growing demand for telecommunications in Qatar. Customers experiencing issues during the transition can contact their service provider for assistance.
This decision reflects CRA’s commitment to providing innovative and reliable telecommunications services, aligned with the goals of Qatar’s National Vision 2030 and the Third National Development Strategy (2024–2030). By granting access to more bandwidth, the CRA is addressing the increasing demand for mobile services driven by digital advancements like artificial intelligence (AI), 5G, the Internet of Things (IoT), and cloud computing, ensuring that Qatar remains at the forefront of technological innovation.
