The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has launched a public consultation on proposed changes to the regulations for telecommunications customer equipment. The updates aim to improve device safety, strengthen emergency calling performance, and keep Australia's telecom standards up to date.

What's Being Proposed?

The proposed changes include:

• New Air Interface and Safety Standards for telecommunications equipment.

• Updated compliance requirements for mobile phones to meet the latest industry standards.

• A transition period to help manufacturers adapt to the new requirements.

• Continued acceptance of AS/NZS 62368.1:2022 until March 2029, before full adoption of the 2026 edition.

What Does This Mean for Manufacturers?

If the proposals are adopted, manufacturers and importers may need to update product testing, technical documentation, and compliance processes to meet the new Australian requirements before placing products on the market.

What's Next?

ACMA is seeking feedback from industry stakeholders, with the consultation open until 17 September 2026. Once the consultation closes, ACMA will review the comments before finalising the new regulations.
