Sri Lanka Opens 5G Spectrum Auction for 3.5 GHz and 27 GHz Bands
The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) has issued the Notice of Assignment (NoA), announcing the country’s 2025 5G spectrum auction. The process will allocate frequencies in the 3.5 GHz and 27 GHz bands to eligible mobile operators, marking a major milestone in Sri Lanka’s journey toward nationwide fifth-generation (5G) connectivity.Â
Spectrum Bands and Lot Details
According to the TRCSL notice, two frequency bands will be auctioned:
3.5 GHz band (3400–3600 MHz): Designated for IMT-2020/5G mobile broadband, offered in two lots of 100 MHz each.
27 GHz band (27 000–27 400 MHz): Intended for high-capacity 5G fixed wireless access and enterprise applications, offered in two lots of 200 MHz each.
Each bidder may secure only one lot per band, ensuring a fair and balanced spectrum distribution among licensed operators.
Eligibility and Auction Format
Participation is limited to licensed mobile operators, with the auction conducted through a clock auction format followed by a frequency identification stage to assign specific spectrum blocks.
5G Spectrum Framework
The spectrum assignments will be valid for ten years and must be used for IMT-2020 (5G) services. Spectrum sharing is allowed under national regulations, while spectrum trading is strictly prohibited.
The auction aims to strengthen network capacity, performance, and support the country’s broader digital transformation goals. For more details on Sri Lanka TRCSL regulatory updates, feel free to contact us at info@nanotechsol.com.
